M/V STRAITS SUCCESS

This week, we went to Port of Batangas City, we visited one of the NYK ship, the M/V STRAITS SUCCESS, but before leaving the campus, we were briefed about the objectives and the things we are required to look for, both in the bridge and in the deck.
In that activity, I have learned about actual draft readings in the forward, middle and aft of the vessel. I also learned how to read the gyro compass and magnetic compass, the variation, deviation and the steps in computing for the compass error. I also learned about the equipments that are needed for communicating to others and use as a radio like the IMARSAT- C, MFHF that stands for High Frequency and Low Frequency. I also learned about the hoisting of flag. The flag on the starboard must be the flag of the country the vessel docked as a sign of respect to them and on the port side, the pilot flags were put. Lastly, I have learned about the engine room, it is composed of some engines like generators, ventilation system and the control room. The control room includes the panels that are link on the engines outside the room.
There were still many things that I have learned in that activity, they are just the applications of the topics that had been discussed last semester. Shipboard visit is one of the activities to familiarize the parts of the ship and its purpose.
